scad style: the rise of the blog

last thursday i went to the scad style event “from magazine to monitor – the rise of the blog.”  it was a panel discussion led by richard mishaan.  bloggers nick olsen, rita konig, jaithan kochar and eddie ross sat on the panel and discussed topics ranging from their blog beginnings to what they think about giveaways on blogs.  i enjoyed hearing the panel’s perspective on blogging because most of them got their start in print publications.  it was very interesting to hear their thoughts on the evolution from print publications to the blogging era and how it’s changing the design world.

here are some key points from my notes that i jotted down during the discussion:

- the printed page will never die…but it will evolve.

- everyone loves beautiful pictures!  (i thought it was interesting to hear that nick doesn’t like too much text.  i’m the same way.  i get lost in the text sometimes.  the more pictures the better for me.)

- elements of authenticity are key.  it’s nice to feel like you know the reader.

eddie and jaithan

- there are no rules in blogging.

nick and rita

- blogging is one of the best ways to get your brand out there.

i figured i would run into some of my blogging friends there and i did.  i saw lakeitha from home to three duncan boys and claire from high gloss blue.  erica of bluelabel bungalow was also there.

  1. Looks like such a great time with lots to learn from the panel- I wish I lived closer I would have totally gone

  2. I know how fortunate the panel was to meet our Atlanta bloggers. I know what Nick means about the words. Writing worth reading is HARD. But when blogs are personal - that is, when they speak with a human voice - the words work very well. People read blogs for fun. They don't read corporate websites at all.

  3. Hi Christi!

I enjoyed hearing what the panel had to say that night. To sum up what I think about blogging and magazines and their coexistence is this: I love magazines. Their is nothing like checking the mail and having at least one waiting on me! But, after flipping through and doing a little reading, I can't wait to see what my fellow bloggers have to say about the new issue. Its good to see weather or not they love it or hate it. Blogging isn't going anywhere and neither are the good magazines out there. I love them both!

And again, it was so nice to meet you and claire! I can't wait to check out her blog!

Oh and that table from Target would look nice my family room! And, I'm totally going to use the washcloth cupcake idea;)

    Have a great night!

  4. "- elements of authenticity are key. it’s nice to feel like you know the reader. "

my favorite point! this was an excellent panel discussion and i think there should be more dialog like this!

i look forward to running into you now. before long we'll be old buds ;-) Hope to see you tomorrow, too! i'll be waiting with my camera ;-)

  5. Oh, how fun! I wish I could have gone - and met you all - so thanks for sharing what they had to say.

I love to hear your comments. Thanks for leaving one. xo, Cristi
